Taking off from Heathrow was entirely surreal. Even landing didn’t seem to plant the idea of travelling in my head. I’ve spent nearly a day in this city and still I just feels like an outing. Or a weekend. I think only when I get further into this trip that I’ll realise it’s for longer than it feels.
With my little bumbag and the blisters from flip flops, I could be nothing but a tourist. When waiters and waitresses talk to me and I stare blankly at them and say “er....no Habla espanol, Lo siento. Can I have the pasta” I feel silly. Although I translated ‘carrot cake’ on a sign earlier. Not the most helpful phrase.
These first few days are hardcore tourism. Two days of non-stop sights, then one last day to do any of the museums I fancy in the city. And then sun, sea and sand in Tulum. I only like the first of those three.
Mexico City is like a European city on speed. The culture of invaders and revolutions. The hustlers and street vendors that have flare. There are full rock bands busking. Like Venice, the city is sinking, and you can see it with the never ending roadworks and uneven flooring. I fell down a hole once.
I am trying to approach this trip with más enthusiasm. It’s been such a long time coming, it’s hard not to feel underwhelmed, or even indifferent.
I have incredible experiences and countries ahead of me. I just hope my head and my heart catch up in time.
The selfies start tomorrow
