I love cities. So sue me. Born in the suburbs, I love everything cities have to offer. I want all the lights the noise, the skyscrapers, The buses, the bins and the traffic.
I don't feel comfortable in the countryside. It's too quiet. Too peaceful. There's nothing to block out my thoughts. If I want to be alone with my thoughts I'll do it myself. In a park in the city, most likely.
Cities are a mish mash of history and culture. The architecture ranges and the people bring a vibrancy I've never seen elsewhere.
So, consequently, I loved Panama City. I was only there for 3 days, and mostly I slept or watched Netflix, but I did go on my first City Sightseeing bus since Australia. I took it up to the infamous Panama Canal that I remember my granddad getting really excited by. A museum on the feat of engineering it required and continues to require. It seems like a mammoth task to operate smoothly.
Back on the sightseeing bus I took it down to Casco Antiguo, or 'Old Town'. Had thai food (using a discount voucher from the bus tour guide), walked around looking at expensive panama hats. Grabbed a mojito from a stand in the street. Can't go wrong with a classic mojito for $5.
Then finally back on the bus to my original starting point. For being a passenger for 5 hours, I was knackered.
My last day in Panama City I sunbathed (and got burnt) and had a couple of beers. Pretty relaxed, which is exactly what I needed in order to face the 12 hour bus journey back to San Jose. The express bus doesn't stop, so it shaved off 3 hours from the original journey down and I arrived at midnight.
I have this hotel room for 2 more hours, and I'm sitting writing this at a desk. A desk! I fly to Santiago, Chile tonight, arriving tomorrow at 6.40am. Chile is my penultimate country before Antartica...
1st-5th March, Panama City
Watched: Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Netflix here doesn't have season 3 and I'm fuming.
Read: The Thirst. Serial killer vampirist tormenting our protagonist detective. Riveting stuff.
Ate: Hard Rock Café quinoa burger, Phad thai and gyoza, and pasta.
Drank: Mojito and beer. And a lot of aloe water.
