Fishing for meaning

My last 4 days on Koh Samui were spent in Fisherman’s Village at the north end of the island. I booked a yoga holiday which consisted of food, a massage and yoga classes for 3 days, at the Yogarden.

After some confusion, I checked into my hotel and was presented with a large room all to myself with a balcony - so much space! To be fair, I’d had the dorm room to myself for two nights but this room was airy and had a fridge and a tv!

I was in the PelegrĂn Hotel for 3 nights, and on my first night I got drunk by 7pm and had to watch Night of Too Many Stars on YouTueb to sober up.
Thankfully I did and it meant I was up bright and early for my first yoga class on Tuesday morning - Vinyasa Flow. I sweat like a mofo, even under all the fans. It was refreshing to be centred and focus on myself, which I only extended with the second class of the day, Yin Yoga. A practice that involves holding poses for several minutes at a time, it really relaxes me that in the Shavasana at the end I almost fell asleep. I had noodles for lunch and then went back to take a shower and nap before the 4pm class...only to wake up at gone 4pm. Oh well. I did a 20 minutes routine from YouTube and went for a massage to stop myself going back to sleep.

So for three days, I stretched and breathed and “eek”ed in pain as instructors pushed my body deeper into poses. By the end of it, I ached. Ashtanga involves warming-up with bear crawls and squats. Beginners Yoga was more my thing. The dynamic Flow instructor got us to try and get us to put our legs around our heads. Normal Flow was kinder. And the massage that was included was interrupted by two cats fighting on the roof of the room.
The food was incredible. Fresh juices and vegan rice paper rolls, salads etc. I was always well fed and felt nourished. So I would go and get Phad Thai or Tapas in the evenings.

On my last day I skipped the morning class and went to Yin Yoga at 11. After that, my massage and food, I moved my bag to my hostel for the night. It had a pool I wouldn’t use, and I got upgraded to a 4 bed from an 8 bed as a special surprise. After my last yoga session I had food and went back. Downstairs they watched Jaws, and I jokingly suggested Jaws 2 when it finished. They put it on. I laughed a lot, and played with the cats the hostel had. When it finished, the barman gave me the remote control and I watched Fast and Furious 6. I got very involved. After that, I ate a packet of crisps and went to bed. It was so cool in my room it was lush. I wanted to sleep longer, but got up and had breakfast and walked to the 7/11 for snacks for the boat.

The taxi picked me up 5 minutes early and we had an hour wait til our ferry. Half an hour after that, I was on Koh Phangan.
And half an hour after that I was at my hostel, following my first bike taxi. I silently prayed to every deity not to die, comforted only by the fact that the dude would want paying, and I couldn’t pay him if I died. My fingers went numb from gripping on and my thighs hurt - how do people sit on the backs of bikes for any length of time?

Anyway. Party time (?!)
